Coastal garden plants don’t get much more iconic than this. The coastal or mountain flax from New Zealand, Phormium cookianum. The important element thing to remember when using coastal garden plants is to think about their country of origin. A lot of the plants that I use in coastal gardens tend to be frem the island nations of New Zealand or Japan. These plants have evolved to thrive in the salt laden windswept environments of these countries and do well in the coastal gardens of the UK. It is their thick, tough and often waxy foliage that make them perfectly suited to thrive in these conditions.
